VIALLI AND MAURO FOUNDATION FOR RESEARCH AND SPORT – ONLUS BOARD OF DIRECTORS' REPORT FINAL BALANCE AT 31.12.2010

The Vialli and Mauro Foundation for Research and Sport ONLUS has carried on its commitment to finance research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) throughout 2010.
During the year the Foundation fulfilled the commitments taken on and accomplished the
following projects:

- within Objective 2: “Scholarship to the Amedeo Avogadro University of Novara concerning the clinical applications of autologous mesenchymal stem cells in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis”. In June 2010 € 2,313 were allocated as settlement and final amount. The objective, launched in 2006, envisaged the allocation of an initial three-year grant amounting to 50,000 euros. Subsequently the A. Avogadro University of Novara asked the Foundation to extend the grant to the academic year 2009/2010; the Foundation accepted and allocated further 18,000 euros. The winner of the first call, Dr. Tarletti, resigned before the end of the third year, as did the winner of the extension, Dr. Testa. The Foundation has required a detailed account of the funds provided to both researchers in order to settle the amount actually due. Checks have revealed that the funds allocated officially amounted to 59,000 euros, whereas the University had actually provided 61,313.10 euros to the researchers. Hence, in June 2010, the Foundation paid 2,313 euros to the University as settlement for the objective and, as a consequence, it released the funds set aside for the objective, amounting to 6,886.90 euros, making them vailable for the institutional objectives.
- within Objective 4: “Analysis of genetic and environmental risks in the development of ALS inItalian professional football players”. In July € 7,500 were provided to the Maria Negri Institute of Milan for the one-year extension of the scholarship approved in 2009. The objective was approved in 2007 and since then the overall amount allocated by the Foundation has amounted to 218,956 euros. The balance at 31 December 2010 of the funds set aside and devoted to this objective amounted to 27,954 euros (including 7,500 as settlement for the oneyear extension of the scholarship and 20,554.00 euros for further demands of expendable materials, if any).
- within Objective 8: AriSLA – Italian Foundation for Research on ALS” The Foundation has been a founding member since 2008. Throughout 2010 it has fulfilled its financial
commitments, amounting to € 100,000, together with the AISLA association, the Telethon
Foundation and the Cariplo Foundation. AriSLA has regularly received from the founding
members, as envisaged in its Articles of Association, an overall payment of 1 million euros to be devoted to the scientific research on ALS.
- within Objective 9: “Research project for the identification of proteins altered by the disease, known as biomarkers, in the cells of patients affected by Amiotrophic Lateral Sclerosis". In July 30,000.00 euros were allocated to the Telethon Foundation as settlement amount for the objective established on occasion of the 2009 TELETHON marathon.
- within Objective 10: “CanALS: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled,
Multicentre Study to Assess the Efficacy on Spasticity Symptoms of a Cannabis Sativa Extractin Motor Neurone Disease Patients.” The Foundation has approved and allocated a further contribution to ARISLA amounting to 48,752 euros for the adoption of the CANALS project thanks to the funds collected through the 2010 “SMS solidale” fund-raising campaign. Out of the 105 proposals assessed by AriSLA International Scientific Committee, which is made of 40 international experts and scientists, the study has been considered one of the 5 top excellence projects. As is well known, the selection is fully based on the principle of peer review.
In 2010 the founding members donated € 10,500; moreover they made available the premises located in via Piave 10 and offered their services to the Foundation with the only purpose of promoting the institutional projects. The thanks of the Board of Directors go to the founding members and to all the supporters.
As explained in detail in the explanatory notes, donations collected have been partially used for the above described institutional projects and partially set aside in specific purpose funds. In 2011 the Foundation will pursue the following Objectives, allocating resources as explained below:
Objective no. 04
“Analysis of genetic and environmental risks in the development of ALS in Italian professionalfootball players”. Check of the correct fulfilment of the project and administrative account with the aim of accomplishing the allocation of funds promised (remaining fund amounting to 27,954 euros).
Objective no. 07
Ten-year scholarship on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis provided to the neurological hospital ofTurin”. As a whole the economic commitment taken on in 2009 by the Foundation amounts to 450,000 euros (equal to 45,000 per year). The Foundation awaits a notice from the University of Turin regarding the launch of the project, which is not running yet. The foundation hopes that the proceedings can start in 2011.
Objective no. 08
AriSLA – Italian Foundation for Research on ALS” As founding member, the Foundation
commits itself to pay the membership fee of € 100,000 for the fourth year.
In 2011 the Foundation is willing to carry on its activity of fund raising both through the
participation in events organised by the supporters who offer their expertise to the Foundation and through initiatives directly promoted with the objective of reducing the organizational costs of the events and of increasing the resources available for institutional purposes.
Also for the year 2010 the Foundation will be included in the list of the bodies eligible to receive the 5 ‰ contribution from the taxes paid by tax payers. Our hope is that these tax provisions facilitate the raising of funds to be used for institutional purposes.
As we already did the previous year and since we deeply respect all those that have been
supporting and will support the Vialli and Mauro Foundation for Research and Sport – Onlus, we pursued the objective of providing the highest transparency to our activities, not only in the initiatives we have promoted, but also in the financial and management aspects that can be found in the balance approved by the Board of Directors, which we call upon you to read carefully.
On behalf of the Board of Directors

THE CHAIRPERSON
(Gianluca Vialli)
